Esplanade Offstage hosts
little red comma, a digital festival of Singapore literature. As part of the festival, they commissioned me to write a response to “The Gift” by Melissa De Silva — a short story from her Singapore Literature Prize-winning book, ‘Others’ Is Not A Race.
My essay unpacked her story’s sociocultural nuances for the benefit of non-Eurasian readers; my own experiences growing up Eurasian in Singapore woven in with the context behind our shared perspectives. I used quotes from Melissa’s story to frame my own as a call-and-response tribute to our heritage and status quo.
